Although gains in access to water services over the past two decades have been large, more than two billion people still lack access to safely managed drinking water. This study examines and compares free chlorine taste and acceptability thresholds of rural Indigenous Ngäbe and rural Latino Panamanians to study if taste aversion may be a limiting factor in chlorination of community systems in Panama using the three-alternative forced choice test methodology. This study is the first to establish a best-estimate taste threshold for a rural Indigenous group and the only study in Latin America to report best-estimate taste thresholds using those methods. Median taste thresholds were 0.87 mg/L Cl2 for Indigenous Ngäbe participants (n = 82) and 1.64 mg/L Cl2 for Latino participants (n = 64), higher than both the minimum concentration for biologically safe water (0.2 mg/L) and the recommended concentration range in Panama (0.3-0.8 mg/L). Median acceptability thresholds were established much higher than taste thresholds at 3.45 mg/L Cl2. The results show that the ability to accurately taste chlorine may not be the limiting factor for adoption of safe water initiatives in remote and Indigenous communities.

OBJECTIVES: The causes of hypogeusia include zinc deficiency, systemic illness, and consumption of drugs. Notably, patients with oral cavity diseases such as oral candidiasis and salivary gland hypofunction may present with risk factors that remain unreported. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between age, sex, smoking status, serum zinc concentration, oral candidiasis, saliva volume, and taste function in patients with hypogeusia. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Overall, 335 participants who complained of taste abnormalities underwent a taste test. Based on the recognition threshold value, the participants were classified as normal individuals (recognition threshold of 1 and 2) and patients with hypogeusia (recognition threshold of ≥3). The clinical characteristics, including resting saliva volume (RSV) and stimulated saliva volume (SSV), were compared, and a multivariate logistic regression analysis focusing on RSV was performed. RESULTS: Patients with hypogeusia had a lower RSV than normal individuals for all tastes, but not for SSV. Based on the results of regression analysis, RSV was identified as an independent predictor of hypogeusia for salty and bitter tastes. Moreover, the proportion of patients with decreased RSV increased as the number of taste qualities exceeding the reference recognition threshold increased. Furthermore, a decrease in RSV was associated with an increase in the recognition threshold for salty and bitter tastes. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results of the present study, moisturizing the oral cavity may be useful against hypogeusia.

Individual taste sensitivity influences food preferences, nutritional control, and health, and differs greatly between individuals. The purpose of this study was to establish a method of measuring and quantifying an individual's taste sensitivity and to evaluate the relationship between taste variation and genetic polymorphisms in humans using agonist specificities of the bitter taste receptor gene, TAS2R38, with the bitter compound 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP). We precisely detected the threshold of PROP bitter perception by conducting the modified two-alternative forced-choice (2AFC) procedure with the Bayesian staircase procedure of the QUEST method and examined genetic variation in TAS2R38 in a Japanese population. There were significant differences in PROP threshold between the three TAS2R38 genotype pairs for 79 subjects: PAV/PAV vs AVI/AVI, p < 0.001; PAV/AVI vs AVI/AVI, p < 0.001; and PAV/PAV vs PAV/AVI, p < 0.01. Our results quantified individual bitter perception as QUEST threshold values: the PROP bitter perception of individuals with the PAV/PAV or PAV/AVI genotypes was tens to fifty times more sensitive than that of an individual with the AVI/AVI genotype. Our analyses provide a basic model for the accurate estimation of taste thresholds using the modified 2AFC with the QUEST approach.

Interpreting the relationship between different taste function tests of different stimuli, such as chemical and electrical stimulation, is still poorly understood. This study aims to analyze visually as well as quantitatively how to interpret the relationship of results between taste function tests using different stimuli. Patients who underwent the whole mouth test and Electrogustometry (EGM) at a tertiary medical center between August 2018 and December 2018 were reviewed retrospectively with electronic medical records. Of the 110 patients, a total of 86 adults who self-reported that their taste function was normal through a questionnaire were enrolled. EGM measured the thresholds of the chorda tympani (CT) and glossopharyngeal nerve (GL) area of the tongue. The whole mouth test measured detection and recognition thresholds for sweet, salty, bitter, sour, and umami taste. Statistical analyses of Pearson's, Spearman's rank and polyserial correlation and multidimensional scaling (MDS) was performed. The EGM threshold for the average value of both CT regions and the recognition threshold of the whole mouth test were significantly correlated in sweet, salty, bitter, and sour taste (r = 0.244-0.398, P < 0.05), and the detection threshold was correlated only significant in sweet (r = 0.360, P = 0.007). In the MDS analysis results, the three-dimensional (D) solution was chosen over the 2-D solution because of the lower stress. Detection-, recognition threshold of whole mouth test and EGM thresholds of CT and GL area, those were standardized by Z-score, formed well-distinguished sections in the MDS analyses. The EGM threshold of the CT area was closer to the detection and recognition thresholds than the EGM threshold of the GL area. In general, the EGM threshold was closer to the recognition threshold than the detection threshold for each taste. Overall, visualization of the relationship of whole mouth test and EGM by MDS was in good agreement with quantitative analysis. EGM and whole mouth test seem to reflect different aspects of taste. However, when interpreting the EGM results, the EGM threshold of the CT area will show more similarity to the recognition threshold than the detection threshold for the whole mouth test.

Human gingival fibroblast cells (HGF-1 cells) present an important cell model to investigate the gingiva's response to inflammatory stimuli such as lipopolysaccharides from Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg-LPS). Recently, we demonstrated trans-resveratrol to repress the Pg-LPS evoked release of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) via involvement of bitter taste sensing receptor TAS2R50 in HGF-1 cells. Since HGF-1 cells express most of the known 25 TAS2Rs, we hypothesized an association between a compound's bitter taste threshold and its repressing effect on the Pg-LPS evoked IL-6 release by HGF-1 cells. To verify our hypothesis, 11 compounds were selected from the chemical bitter space and subjected to the HGF-1 cell assay, spanning a concentration range between 0.1 µM and 50 mM. In the first set of experiments, the specific role of TAS2R50 was excluded by results from structurally diverse TAS2R agonists and antagonists and by means of a molecular docking approach. In the second set of experiments, the HGF-1 cell response was used to establish a linear association between a compound's effective concentration to repress the Pg-LPS evoked IL-6 release by 25% and its bitter taste threshold concentration published in the literature. The Pearson correlation coefficient revealed for this linear association was R2 = 0.60 (p < 0.01), exceeding respective data for the test compounds from a well-established native cell model, the HGT-1 cells, with R2 = 0.153 (p = 0.263). In conclusion, we provide a predictive model for bitter tasting compounds with a potential to act as anti-inflammatory substances.

Electrogustometry (EGM) is a practical way to test taste. It is typically performed using unipolar electrodes, with the anode on the tongue and the cathode on the hand, forearm, or neck. This results in electric current passing through nontaste tissues and adds a level of impracticality to its clinical application. We compared, using a repeated measures counterbalanced design, anodal thresholds from a unipolar electrode to those of a unique bipolar electrode in which the anode and cathode are contiguously located. Both sides of the anterior tongue were assessed in 70 subjects, as were the effects of age and sex. Nonparametric analyses were performed. The median threshold of the bipolar electrode's central disk (2.49 µA) did not differ from that of the unipolar electrode (2.96 µA) (P = 0.84). On average, older persons exhibited higher thresholds. No significant sex or tongue side effects were evident. Interestingly, when the annular (donut-shaped) bipolar electrode served as the anode, the threshold was higher than that of the other electrodes (5.19 µA; Ps < 0.001). This conceivably reflected lessened summation of activity among adjacent afferents and partial sampling of tongue regions with fewer taste buds. Correlations among all EGM thresholds were nominally higher for women than for men, ranging from 0.83 to 0.85 for women and 0.54 to 0.67 for men; all Ps < 0.001. This study validates the use of a bipolar electrode for assessing taste function, averting movement of current through nontaste-related tissues and making such testing safer and more practical.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate chorda tympani nerve function as measured by unilateral increases of gustatory thresholds in the presence of ipsilateral acute otitis media. METHODS: Prospective clinical study comparing electrogustometric measurements was conducted to evaluate the taste thresholds of each side of the tongue in a patient during an acute episode of unilateral acute otitis media. Included were patients aged 12-40 who presented to the emergency department and outpatient ear, nose, and throat clinic of a university-affiliate tertiary medical center with unilateral acute otitis media between January 2019 and January 2020 and consented to the study. RESULTS: Eleven patients were initially recruited into the study, and 10 patients aged (mean ± standard deviation) 26.1 ± 11.2 years comprised the final study group. Taste thresholds were significantly elevated on the side ipsilateral to the ear affected by acute otitis media (P < .05). CONCLUSION: Chorda tympani nerve conductance is impaired during the acute stage of acute otitis media. This may have implications in the understanding of peripheral neural properties during acute middle ear inflammatory conditions and on the diagnosis of acute otitis media.

Objectives Though having a high salt taste threshold has been associated with hypertension, its exact determinants remains unclear. This study aimed to identify the determinants of salt taste threshold in a community-based population and to determine the relationship between salt taste thresholds and the simultaneous presence of multiple determinants.Methods Of the 1,117 participants of the baseline survey of the Kobe study, a cohort study of healthy urban residents, aged 40-74 years, with no history of cancer or cardiovascular diseases, nor undergoing treatment for hypertension, diabetes, or dyslipidemia, was conducted. Among them, 1,116 underwent the salt taste threshold test, and urine samples were collected to determine their estimated salt intake. The salt taste threshold test was carried out using SALSAVE®, with a salt taste threshold of 0.6% defined as normal, and that of 0.8% or more defined as high. A binomial logistic regression model was used, with high salt taste threshold as the objective variable, and life and family status, education, smoking and alcohol drinking status, intake status of salt dried fish, stress indicators, and daily salt intake (estimated from the urine sample) as the explanatory variables. A binomial logistic regression analysis was conducted, through multivariate analysis using the forced entry method, with factors influencing salt taste threshold as explanatory variables, and salt taste threshold (normal/high) as the objective variable. This analysis was performed excluding the urinary sodium-to-potassium ratio to account for multicollinearity with the estimated daily salt intake.Results The mean age was 60.9±9.0 years for men, and 58.0±8.7 years for women. The salt taste threshold was normal in 80.9% (n=903) of the participants (73.6% [n=251] men and 84.1% [n=652] women), and high in 19.1% (n=213) of the participants (26.3% [n=90] men and 15.9% [n=123] women). Multivariate analysis revealed that smoking habits were significantly associated with a higher salt taste threshold, with an odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of 2.51 (1.33-4.74) for all participants. The odds ratio for a high salt taste threshold was 1.45 (1.03-2.03) for the top 25% estimated daily salt intake group, showing a significant association with a high salt taste threshold. In the analysis by sex, smoking habits were associated with higher salt taste thresholds, while an association with estimated daily salt intake was observed only in men.Conclusion Smoking status and estimated daily salt intake were associated with higher salt taste thresholds in healthy urban residents.

PROPOSE: High salt intake, correlated with high salt taste threshold, may accelerate renal injury in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. However, few studies have focused on factors that influence salt taste threshold. Therefore, we aimed to identify factors that influence the salt taste threshold of CKD patients, to provide more precise salt restriction recommendations in dietary therapy. METHODS: Between April 2016 and March 2019, we measured the salt taste threshold of 1019 CKD patients, aged 22-78 years, from 52 hospitals across southwestern China, and then we performed a cross-sectional study. RESULTS: The mean salt taste threshold was 0.37 ± 0.16% NaCl. There were 115 (11.3%), 670 (65.7%), and 234 (23.0%), respectively, patients who had low (≤ 0.1% NaCl), medium (0.1-0.4% NaCl), and high (> 0.4% NaCl) salt taste thresholds. One-way ANOVA and regression results revealed that sex (male), age, decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate, and absence of salt restriction were factors that influenced CKD groups with high salt taste threshold. CONCLUSION: We found an independent correlation between contributory factors including sex, age, eGFR, and salt restriction behavior of subjects with the salt taste threshold of CKD patients. Our findings also offer insights on salt taste thresholds that could be useful for clinicians advising salt restriction to impair the salt taste sensitivity of the corresponding populations.

Studying nutritional status from the perspective of taste sensitivity, rather than only dietary patterns, may provide new insights into the role of taste receptor signaling in the development of metabolic-associated diseases. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated the possible influence of sociodemographic (sex and smoking habit) and clinical variables (dental cavities, missing teeth, sinusitis, rhinitis, body mass index and metabolic high prevalence family antecedent diseases) on tastant (sucrose, monosodium glutamate, sodium chloride, citric acid, quinine, sinigrin, phenylthiocarbamide) recognition thresholds (RTs) in a college-aged cohort (n = 397). Predictive models for the tastant RTs were generated and a higher sucrose RT was found in females than in males, while sinusitis and rhinitis explained sucrose and sodium chloride RTs. Smoking habit was not an important predictive factor of taste sensitivity, although its long-term influence on RTs remains unclear. Additionally, a positive correlation was found between all the tastant RTs studied. Although results did not show a clear pattern, the statistical approach employed should prove useful in future studies of predictors of taste sensitivity.

Vitamins are known to generate bitterness, which may contribute to an off-taste or aftertaste for some nutritional supplements. This negative sensation can lead to a reduction in their consumption. Little is known about the bitter taste threshold and taste sensing system for the bitter taste detection of vitamins. To better understand the mechanisms involved in bitterness perception, we combined taste receptor functional assays and sensory analysis. In humans, bitter taste detection is mediated by 25 G-protein-coupled receptors belonging to the TAS2R family. First, we studied the bitterness of thirteen vitamins using a cellular-based functional taste receptor assay. We found four vitamins that can stimulate one or more TAS2Rs. For each positive molecule-receptor combination, we tested seven increasing concentrations to determine the half-maximal effective concentration (EC50) and the cellular bitter taste threshold. Second, we measured the bitter taste detection threshold for four vitamins that exhibit a strong bitter taste using a combination of ascending series and sensory difference tests. A combination of sensory and biological data can provide useful results that explain the perception of vitamin bitterness and its real contribution to the off-taste of nutritional supplements.

Although many patients suffer from taste disorder, methods to improve taste sensitivity are limited. To develop a taste recall training method to improve the perception of taste, 42 healthy individuals were randomly assigned to either the training or the control group. Using the filter paper disc method, participants in the training group were asked to match the four tastes (sweetness, saltiness, sourness, and bitterness) between those of taste recognition thresholds and those of a one-step higher concentration until they get them right. Then, they were asked to match the four tastes between those of one-step lower and one-step higher in concentration from their taste recognition thresholds until they get them right. Finally, they were asked to match the four tastes between those of one-step lower concentration and those of their taste recognition thresholds until they get them right. This training was repeated until perfectly matched. The taste recall training program led to a lowered taste recognition threshold in healthy adults for each taste quality, suggesting the improvement of taste sensitivity. This lowered threshold for each taste was observed with each additional training session. We conclude that this taste recall training method might be a therapeutic approach for treating taste disorder.

Differences in the ability to identify and perceive tastes and smells might influence food consumption and, ultimately, chronic nutrition-related conditions such as overweightness and obesity. This study aimed to investigate the associations between taste sensitivity and odour function, anthropometry, and quantity of fungiform papillae in children at age 11-15. Taste strips (4 base tastes), U-Sniff sticks (12 selected smells), and a filter paper strip impregnated with 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP) were used. The photographic method was used to estimate the number of fungiform papillae (FP) on the tongue. The results showed that the quantity of FP was not related to anthropometry or gender. The taste test total scores were higher for girls, for whom the median score was 14 (12.0-15.0), than for boys, for whom the median score was 12 (9.0-13.0). Of the children, 13.9% had some difficulty in identifying odours. The Mann-Whitney U test showed that children who were most sensitive to bitter taste had more FP (p = 0.0001). The median score for this group (score = 4) was 34.0 (27.0-37.0). For those who had some problems with correctly assessing all bitter taste strips (score = 0-3), the median score was 24.0 (20.0-31.0). Higher numbers of FP were also observed in tasters, that is, people sensitive to PROP, than in nontasters. Only some measures of the taste function correlated with each other, but not very significantly. We concluded that there are multiple perceptual phases of taste, with no single measure able to entirely represent the sense of taste.

Electrogustometry (EGM) is one of the most useful diagnostic tools widely used to evaluate the taste function by measuring the perception threshold to electrogustatory stimuli on the tongue. However, the effects of oral environments on electrogustometric threshold (EGMT) remain to be established despite its simple applicability. Thus, this study aims to determine the effect of mucosal dryness on EGMT in 68 healthy subjects. The experiment was conducted in two different conditions. First, the baseline EGMT was measured when the dryness of the tongue surface was normal. Second, the EGMT was remeasured after the tongue was intentionally desiccated. The current study showed that the mean of the EGMT was significantly increased when the tongue was desiccated, possibly indicating the reduced sensitivity to electrogustatory stimuli. Such an alteration may be related to the disturbed EGM electrical circuit through the dried mucosa with enhanced impedance. Thus, these findings suggested that mucosal dryness should be considered for better evaluation of gustatory function using EGM.

Olfactory and gustatory disorders are prominent symptoms of acute COVID-19. Although both senses recover in many patients within weeks to months, persistency has been described in up to 60%. However up to now most reports on the course of chemosensitive disorders after COVID-19 are not based on psychophysical testing but only on subjective patients' ratings. In this study we assessed both olfaction and gustation using psychophysical tests eight months after COVID-19. Validated psychophysical testing revealed hyposmia in 18% and hypogeusia in even 32% of 303 included patients. This shows that olfactory and especially gustatory disorders have to be seen as important chronic symptoms post-COVID-19. The high prevalence of gustatory dysfunction indicates that gustatory function does not recover or might even deteriorate in the months following the acute infection.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate changes in the clinical state of taste disorders between 1990, 2003, and 2019 using the same methodology as that in previous studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In June 2019, we mailed a questionnaire to 1100 otolaryngologists belonging to the Japan Society of Stomato-pharyngology and investigated three question categories: "Institution", "Number of patients for 3 months", and "Treatment". In addition, we analyzed some results by the class of institution. RESULTS: The rate of patients who complained of taste disorders in the 2019 survey (220/100,000 persons/year) was twice that of the 1990 survey (110/100,000 persons/year), and slightly higher than that of the 2003 survey (192/100,000 persons/year). The rate of female patients was higher than that of male patients in all age groups. The number of patients was correlated with age up to 70 years of age in both genders. The rates of performing taste tests to assess taste function in the 2019 survey were significantly decreased compared with a 2003 survey (electrogustometry: p<0.001, filter paper disk method: p<0.05 in university). The rate of examination of the serum zinc in the 2019 survey was increased compared with the 1990 survey (p<0.001). Zinc oral therapy was used for the treatment of taste disorders in 239/299 (79.9%) patients/institutes for 3 months. In addition, 213 institutions (69.6%) answered that zinc oral therapy was efficacious for taste disorders. CONCLUSION: The patients who complained of taste disorder have increased. The zinc administration is an appropriate clinical treatment for taste disorders in Japan. To enhance treatment for taste disorders, simpler methods for assessing taste function need to be developed, and the pathological mechanisms of taste disorders other than zinc deficiency need to be clarified.

OBJECTIVES: This study was performed to test the clinical applicability of a new taste test-the waterless empirical taste test (WETT). METHODS: Sixty healthy volunteers and 20 patients with oral cancer were enrolled. They all received the conventional solution-based whole-mouth suprathreshold taste test (WMTT), which contained sucrose, citric acid, sodium chloride, and caffeine solutions for tastants, along with the WETT. The WETT used plastic strips to deliver tastants. The strip was embedded with sucrose, citric acid, sodium chloride, caffeine, or monosodium glutamate taste enhancer in 4 different concentrations. Each strip was tested twice. Thirty of the healthy volunteers received the WETT again to measure a retest reliability. Case-control matching by age and gender was used to compare the scores of WMTT and WETT between 13 healthy volunteers and 13 patients with oral cancer. RESULTS: The correlation was not high between the WMTT and WETT (r < 0.7) whether in the healthy volunteers or in patients with oral cancer. In terms of retest reliability of the WETT, the mean total score was 24.9 ± 7.3 for the first test and 25.8 ± 8.4 for the second test. The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.85 (P < .001). When case-control matching was performed, the WMTT scores were not significantly different between 13 healthy volunteers and 13 patients with oral cancer (P = .266), but the WETT scores were significantly lower in patients with oral cancer (P = .017). CONCLUSION: This study showed that the results of the WETT were not highly correlated with those of the WMTT. However, its retest reliability was high, and its results were significantly different between the healthy volunteers and the patients with oral cancer.

PURPOSE: Taste perception is often affected after stapes surgery despite effort to preserve chorda tympani nerve. The aim was to examine changes of particular taste qualities and their recovery after operation of otosclerosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Taste function was prospectively investigated with a questionnaire and a taste strip test (TST) preoperatively, 3-5 days and 1 year after stapes surgery with the preservation of CTN. RESULTS: In the early postoperative examination, 34/42 patients had a lower TST score, 7/42 decrease of taste in the questionnaire. One year after surgery, 11/42 patients had a lower TST score, 1/42 patients decrease of taste in the questionnaire. The most pronounced decrease in the TST score was in sweet (- 1.76 points, p < 0.001), followed by bitter (- 1.71 points, p < 0.001), salty (- 1.64 points, p < 0.001) and sour taste (- 1.33 points, p < 0.001). The sour taste had a significant lower alteration compared to others. Men had significantly pronounced alteration in salty taste compared to women. The complete recovery was proved in bitter taste. Better recovery in bitter taste was observed in patients younger than 45 years of age. CONCLUSIONS: Gustatory changes after stapes surgery are mostly transient with different impairment and recovery rate for particular taste qualities. A sour taste seems to be relatively resistant to damage. The best recovery rate is in a bitter taste, especially in younger patients.

The aim of our study was to evaluate the associations between sensitivity to fat taste, eating habits and BMI value in a sample of menopausal Polish women. In a population of 95 women, fat taste thresholds with oleic acid were determined, allowing us to classify each woman as a hypersensitive or hyposensitive taster. Eating habits were assessed using a validated KomPAN questionnaire for food frequency. Dietary intake was evaluated based on a food diary. Selected biochemical parameters were measured using a Konelab20i biochemical analyzer. Anthropometric parameters and blood pressure were also measured. Twenty-two menopausal women were classified as hyposensitive to fat taste and 73 as hypersensitive. The hyposensitive tasters were significantly older (p = 0.006), with the majority of them (92%) being postmenopausal (p < 0.001); this group had significantly higher BMI values (p < 0.001) and other adiposity indicators compared to their hypersensitive counterparts. The hyposensitive tasters had higher blood pressure (systolic blood pressure; SBP p = 0.030; diastolic blood pressure; DBP p = 0.003), glucose (p = 0.011) and triacylglycerols levels than the hypersensitive tasters (p = 0.031). Almost half of them had diagnosed metabolic syndrome. Daily eating occasions were associated with low oral fatty acid sensitivity, irrespective of age (p = 0.041) and BMI value (p = 0.028). There were also significant associations between frequency of consumption of meats and eggs, as well as snacks and fast foods and low oral fatty acid sensitivity before adjustment for potential confounders (both associations p < 0.05), which remained after adjustment for age (both associations p < 0.05), but not after adjustment for BMI. A multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that higher BMI value (p = 0.003), along with postmenopausal status (p = 0.003), were associated with low fat taste sensitivity irrespective of age and consumed percentage energy from fat. Postmenopausal status and BMI are associated with low fat taste sensitivity. Fat hyposensitivity may also play a role in eating habits, leading to increased eating occasions and favoring certain types of food. These eating habits may determine increased body weight and the occurrence of metabolic syndrome in mid-life women, especially those who have undergone menopause and have been exposed to the physiological changes which are conducive to these relationships.

BACKGROUND: There are few studies on taste or acoustic reflex (AR) in patients after recovery from facial muscle paralysis (FMP). OBJECTIVES: To investigate the recovery of AR and taste in patients who have recovered from peripheral facial nerve palsy (FNP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 25 patients whose FMP had resolved after treatment for FNP. A difference in taste threshold of ≤4 dB between the affected and unaffected sides in the electric taste test was defined as normal; an AR on the affected side was assessed to be ≥90% of the AR on the unaffected side was defined as normal. RESULTS: Six months after treatment, 8% of patients with FNP who had recovered from FMP still showed taste disorders, and 60% of patients showed abnormal AR. The number of subjects whose electric taste threshold was normal after treatment was significantly higher than the number of subjects whose AR assessment was normal (p < .01). CONCLUSION AND SIGNIFICANCE: This study demonstrates that even among subjects whose FMP is resolved after treatment for FNP, there are some whose taste and AR do not recover. Physicians should be aware of ear symptoms persisting after facial muscle recovery.
